The 11th annual Portage Animal Welfare Society's Fur Ball fundraiser's taking place Saturday night at the PCU Centre's multi-purpose room in Portage la Prairie. Organizer Staci Creighton explains how vital it is for their services.

"It's very important because all of the money raised will go toward veterinary bills of the cats and dogs we take into our care. We spend around $20,000 in veterinary expenses. So, that's obviously our biggest cost and something we need help with. Fundraisers like this will definitely directly go toward that."

She notes Portage has always well-attended the event.

"It is well attended. I think within the last few years with the help of social media we're getting our name out there a lot more. People want to be more involved with us, especially after seeing all the stray animals around town, and all of the issues in the area. If you're unable to attend the social there are sponsor tickets that are $12.00. You can purchase them from any board member, e-mail or call us. You'll be entered to win a $50.00 Walmart gift card."

Creighton notes outlines everyone helped make it possible.

"We have a lot of great sponsors we like the thank. Brite Smile Dental Clinic, Prime Auto, Hub International, Shewfelt's Plumbing and Heating, and MIG insurance. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be able to put on a better social."

She outlines the activities taking place.

'We have draws for Jets tickets. It's Edmonton Oilers versus the Jets on December 1st. We have early bird cash prizes if you come between 8:00 p.m. and 9:30. We have prizes for best-decorated pumpkin. It's $5.00 to register. We just ask you use a pumpkin theme with your pumpkins. The board members do not pick the winner -- it's the people at the socials I think that's a little bit more fun, too. We have great silent auction prizes. All donated by people in the community, and lots of new games."
