A local father-son effort to transport supplies for Fort McMurray ended last week.

Mel Martin of Portage la Prairie, and his son Kevin, loaded a trailer donated by Portage Transport with 48 pallets, totalling 50,000 pounds of goods, and drove it to an Edmonton warehouse. Kevin Martin says they received a warm welcome when they arrived.

"They couldn't have been nicer, they couldn't have been more encouraging, gracious, as much as they could roll out the red carpet in a big warehouse. You could actually play a CFL game in this warehouse, it's so big, and it's just non-stop. There had to be 200 volunteers working there the day we showed up. There are six loading bays for semi-trucks, and they're just assembly line."

Martin calls what they did a small part in a large effort.

"As part if the initiative, we collected signatures that people could sign well-wishes -- big poster boards -- and we took that out there, with it. And, to me, that was just as important because they need to that they have support across this country."
