A local golf club's hoping to provide support for those displaced by wildfires in Fort McMurray.

The Southport Golf Club's hosting a one day tournament Saturday, in hopes of raising funds for the Red Cross relief fund. Club Manager and Head Professional Dennis Heimpel says they're donating half of the price of admission.

"We're doing a charity golf tournament to raise money for the Red Cross to help the people of Fort McMurray. We're doing a nine-hole four-person scramble, so for the $40 dollar entry fee you're going to get steak dinner, some prizes, and $20 dollars of that is a donation for Red Cross in support of Fort McMurray."

He says he didn't need to put much thought into the event before deciding to pull the trigger, as Alberta showed their support during the floods, and it's an area that was already struggling prior to the fires.

"It's on the news all the time, I watch a lot of American TV, and when it's on American TV it must be pretty serious, but really, people need help out there. With the oil fields, the economy's bad enough and to lose their homes like that is devastating, this is an easy way to help out."

Heimpel says he only announced the tournament over the weekend, and already they're starting to see teams sign up.

"I just decided to do this on the weekend and I've already seen some people sign up. Hopefully the weather cooperates, I'm hoping to see 50 to 60 people. We'll register right up until Saturday, unless we're full. We can only hold 72 people at the most, and for a nine-hole tournament that would be a good problem to have."

The tournament starts Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock, with a shotgun start. Those hoping to register for the tournament can contact the golf club at (204) 428-3174.
