Portage la Prairie's Salvation Army Food Bank is in need of a replenishing. Major Brenda Coles explains how the shelves are looking heading into the school year.

"Slim pickings right now. We're making sure to buy enough to keep the basics happening. But it has been a bit of a tough summer, so probably spent a little bit more money on food than I had hoped too. September will be, with back to school, all the expenses with families we expect probably we'll be giving quite a bit of food out. So it'll be gone pretty quickly."

Coles says they spent a little more than expected over the summer, and with the school year around the corner, they need some help filling the shelves.

"If you can help us out, buy some non-perishables, if there's gardeners who want to give us some apples or surplus vegetables, we'll give them away. So if you can help with non-perishables, things that will help get kids back to school that they can put in lunch packs. Just the basics, the pasta, the pasta sauce, beans, peanut butter -- small bottles of peanut butter are really helpful -- that would be great."

Coles says parents are focus on getting their kids back to school, and may need help with lunches and dinners. Head to the Salvation Army's website for more.
