Rainy weather has put some delays on mosquito fogging in Portage la Prairie. Weather permitting, fogging will begin tonight. City parks manager Dave Green outlines their schedule.

"Weather permitting, we're going to do another round of fogging Monday and Tuesday, the 29th and the 30th. The first night we'll be doing the area south of the railway tracks but not including Koko Platz and Mellenville. And once again, weather permitting we'll be doing the area north of the railway tracks, and Koko Platz, Mellenville, and Old Bridge Road on Tuesday night."

He notes their recent statistics.

"We're averaging about 30 per trap with the four traps we do have. It dropped down a bit last night because of the cooler night. Indications are, and with the amount of rain we've been having, we should fog. It's just trying to get the right weather conditions to do it. We definitely can't fog when the temperature gets too low, or it's too windy, or it's too wet."

Green outlines tips to keep in mind during the procedure.

"The number one thing is make sure you are inside. If people are outside we cannot fog. We'll have to shut the fogging machine off. If you are concerned, it wouldn't hurt to close your windows and turn off your air conditioners just while the machine passes. But other than that, we are fogging between 9:30 p.m. and 6:00 in the morning."

He says you can opt out as a no fog zone, seeing this is not a health order. If you want on the list contact their office at (204) 239-8346 before 4:00 p.m. today. Green says there are about ten no-fog zones in place at this point.

Green says malathion, the chemical used in fogging, has a storage issue in Winnipeg. However, Portage doesn't have that problem. He says they bought the chemical directly from the manufacturer, and the product is definitely less than one year old, raising no concerns. He says the City hasn't received notice from Health Canada that anything over a year old must be tested before it can be used, but Portage has no concern. Green says the City doesn't have large storage capacity with climate control, making it necessary to purchase the substance every spring.
