Flu season is around the corner and the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority will be offering flu shots in the weeks to come. Immunization Coordinator Melody Hawryluk says the changing weather is a good reminder that it's time to get immunized.

"Influenza virus is a virus that loves cold weather. That's why we don't see influenza circulating to a large degree during the warm, humid summer months because the virus itself thrives in the cold, dry weather. At this time we are certainly seeing fluctuations in the temperature so it's good to get our body prepared for when the cold weather does arrive."

She notes getting your immunization not only impacts your own health, it also plays a large role in the health of others.

"Herd immunity is really important, particularly for people that are too young to get flu shots. There are certain people that can't have flu shots for certain reasons as well. Maybe their immune systems aren't strong enough to manage a flu shot or their response to a flu vaccine wouldn't be as good as someone who is in a healthier, health category."
