You don't need a licence to enjoy fishing in Manitoba's waters this weekend. It's free family fishing weekend across the province, allowing anyone without a licence to take part in angling. Manitoba Sustainable Fisheries Unit Manager Bill Galbraith says the free weekend has been taking place since 1992, and aims to get people outdoors, enjoying what Manitoba has to offer.

"We can showcase our wonderful natural resources, particularly our fishery resource, but also give people an opportunity to get out, enjoy spending time with friends and family, and enjoy the wonderful experience of catching fish."

You'll be able to fish almost anywhere in the province without a licence, until the end of the day Sunday. Galbraith notes all you need to do is get out and start fishing, adding there are very few restrictions in place.

"This doesn't apply inside national parks. If you're going to Riding Mountain National Park or such, you do require a federal fishing licence. Outside of a national park people can just go out and fish. The other regulation in place is that this only allows conservation limits."

Those who may be using boats this weekend are reminded to ensure they're following regulations surrounding stopping the spread of aquatic invasive species. The province recommends you clean, drain and dry the watercraft, trailer and all water-related equipment and dispose of unwanted bait in the trash.
