The Municipality of Norfolk-Treherne is banning burning, including bon-fires, until further notice. Reeve Craig Spencer says dry conditions in the area have led to multiple fires in the area, and they're hoping to keep residents safe by putting a prohibition in place.

"We've had two significant grass fires in just over a week south of Treherne. Our fire departments have had to attend them. It's taken a lot of effort on our firefighters behalf and machinery and so forth, and we think we need to put a ban on because of the dry conditions that exist."

It marks the first time the municipality's exercised a recent by-law change, that allows the reeve and fire chief to put a ban in place without holding a formal meeting of Council. Spencer says they felt this ban was necessary, and notes the ban will be lifted once conditions improve.

"These fires have been controlled with effort, so we feel a fire ban would benefit the safety of Norfolk-Treherne. We have the ability to also take the ban off in a quick fashion, once we get some rain."

He says they'll lift the ban after it rains, or once the foliage in the area becomes greener, making grass fires less likely.
