A four-year-old boy lost his life in a fire at a residential house at Delta Beach this morning, the RCMP confirms.

Police say in a release, the Portage la Prairie RCMP and Fire Department responded to a fire call at about 5:30 a.m., and reports indicated the four-year-old boy was trapped inside the residence.

"Upon arrival, the house was fully engulfed in flames, preventing the attending officers and firefighters from entering the residence to rescue the child," the RCMP says.

Five people -- two adults, and three female youths aged 12-and-under -- were able to safely escape the burning home, according to the release. The house was almost completely razed as a result of the fire. Mounties say the Office of the Fire Commissioner is on scene and assisting with the investigation. No further details are available at this time.
