The reeve for the RM of Macdonald is looking to Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation to make a change to the southwest perimeter highway around Winnipeg. Brad Erb says the portion of the highway that goes through the RM is a big safety concern, and believes it should be dealt with.

"We had asked for a meeting with MIT, and they obliged and came out. We wanted to get an update on some of the plans for the southwest perimeter of Winnipeg that goes trough our municipality. We've been trying to deal with this issue for a number of years and it just doesn't seem to get any traction. We're trying to work with them and see where they're at, and it sounds like they're going to do a functional study of the perimeter and we're pleased to hear that."

He believes this issue should be a priority to the province.

"We just wanted to emphasize that we seem to always get bumped, and we don't seem to be a priority. We believe that an interchange, or some type of correction in Oak Bluff and the traffic flow on the southwest perimeter, needs to be addressed in short order. We wanted to make it clear that we believe it should be a priority to the province and MIT."

Erb says the highway is a bug safety concern.

"There are huge safety concerns with all of the accesses and and the lights that are on the south perimeter. The condition of the perimeter is poor, the traffic flow through Oak Bluff is very poor. We're mixing pedestrian traffic with residential traffic and with commercial and highway traffic. It's just a poor combination of things that make safety a big concern for us."
