Over $1000 was raised for Morden-based charity, Donate Love, at a fundraising concert Friday night.

Donate Love runs several programs for people and families in the area including a food bank out of its location off of Thornhill St. in Morden.

Brian Thiessen is Co-President of Donate Love with his wife Denise. He said Friday that fundraising events are crucial for the organization.

"A fundraiser like this is very important for us to keep doing what we do," he said. Every week Donate Love provides food and clothes to people free of charge.

Thiessen added that, just like all non-profits, money is Donate Love's biggest requirement; but bringing in big names, like Doc Walker, offers additional notoriety.

"To have Doc Walker is more than we could have ever dreamed."

Doc Walker is a Manitoba-based band that won the Manitoba Country Music Award for 2015. The lead singer, Chris Thornsteinson, lives in a town northwest of Portage called Westbourne. He said coming from a small town helps him and his band mates appreciate playing shows in smaller communities like Morden.

"It's funny," he said. " You do shows like this and you see people hanging out and talking that don't get to have a social evening together. It really brings the community together."

Around 230 people attended the fundraiser held at the Access Event Centre in Morden.
