Thirteen RCMP police dogs now have names, with one being named by a local girl. The puppies were born at the RCMP Police Dog Training Centre in Alberta, and a contest was held to name the newest recruits. Ally Gates of Treherne was one of 13 girls and boys across Canada, each representing a different province or territory, to win the naming contest. Gates says she found out about the contest from her aunt, and was excited to discover Jorgia --the name she submitted-- was selected.

"My aunty Tammy, she found out first and sent it to my mom and then she looked it up. I just thought of a name, it just popped in my head. It makes me very happy and excited. It was fun."

She says part of her submission included a drawing she'd worked on.

"I drew it and it was with a little tree and a Canada flag, and then a police hat and the dog at the bottom with it."

Gates says she's an animal lover, noting her family has two dogs, Beau and Puddles, and also fosters dogs throughout the year. Overall, she says there are no shortage of reasons to love her furry friends.

"Well, I like that they're cute. They love running and playing, and they're really cuddly and fun."

As a winner, Gates will receive a certificate, and 8x10 photo of Jorgia, a plush German shepherd named Justice, and an RCMP cap.
