Summer's here and the time is right for dancing in the streets. That's exactly what happened in Portage la Prairie Friday afternoon, as several joyous participants made their way down Saskatchewan Avenue From Portage Collegiate to Convention Corner. Organizer Josh Wright, who's also the co-chair of the Whoop and Holler Folk Festival, says the event aimed to bring the community together in a way that's being seen across the world.

"It's a new phenomenon that's catching on around the world. It's combining dancing and walking, two physical activities that everyone loves. When you combine it, it really makes one's day better, it adds levity and makes it more fun. It's also contagious too, as other people join in."

The event aimed to get Portagers excited about the upcoming Whoop and Holler Folk Festival. Wright says it seemed to do just that, noting the feedback he was receiving prior to the event was excellent.

"It was a very positive response. I wasn't sure how things would catch on originally. This is a first time thing for Portage, getting people to dance in the streets. Getting a positive response from people wanting to join in was very exciting, and really reflects the fun spirit of our community in Portage."

The Whoop and Holler Folk Festival takes place August 5th, just west of the Hoop and Holler Bend.
