Manitoba's Minister of Growth, Enterprise, and Trade Cliff Cullen says it is too early to say what impact comments coming from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will have on Manitoba.

Trump has indicated he wants to get the United States out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal and he wants to re-open talks for the NAFTA agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico.

“Obviously there is a huge potential there for us as Canadian and Manitobans. We do a lot of trade with the U.S. In fact we year to date have exported $9.9 billion in services already.”

Cullen added that clearly the United States is our biggest trading partner and there is without question some uncertainty.

“I hope cooler heads will prevail and it can be business as usual.”

Moving forward Cullen was asked where the Province of Manitoba goes from here. “We've had discussions regarding this issue. We want to have talks with our neighbouring jurisdictions as well so they realize the importance of the two way trade.”

Cullen isn't hitting the panic button because he feels it is simply too early to say what will happen. “I think most of President-Elect Donald Trump's comments are geared towards Mexico and not Canada."
