Funding for the construction of a new accessible park in Portage la Prairie's north end hinges on your involvement.

And a Portage city councillor continues to push for more votes.

Melissa Draycott is encouraging you to vote in the Aviva Community Contest the Parks Committee is entered in to help build a park on 3rd St. NW. By Monday, more than 13,000 ballots had already been cast towards to the opportunity to secure up to $100,000 for the project.

"You still have time to get your votes in if you haven't voted already," Draycott says. "All you need to vote is an email address, and if you have more than one you can actually register all the addresses you have and vote with each one."

Draycott adds sharing the contest through social media could also help driving up voting numbers.

"We're also asking people to go onto their Facebook or Twitter account and share the link," she says.

Draycott notes there are more than 100 other projects competing against Portage for the funds. She says the construction of an accessible park is a major community need.

"This is a park that we don't have in Portage la Prairie," Draycott says. "This allows somebody with mobility issues to go out and play in a park."

"Right now somebody in a wheelchair, or anybody with mobility issues, is very limited in Portage for what they can do in terms of park structure," Draycott continues. "... And the only way we can make this happen is if people get out there and vote."

The deadline to vote is Oct. 28. You can vote by clicking here.
