The Municipality of Westlake-Gladstone has moved to increase compensation for the mayor and Council.

At its meeting last week, Council gave first reading to a by-law that would see wages increased by two per cent. Mayor David Single says his monthly remuneration would be about $670 per month, while councillors would sit around $520, if the by-law passes.

"The biggest issue is we don't want it to fall to far behind and then have to raise it too much at once," Single says. "We want to keep up. Our employees are getting raises every year, and we kind of want to keep in line with them."

Single adds wages for attending extra meetings will also increase from $16/hour to $17/hour.

The by-law still needs to pass second and third reading.
