The Municipality of North Norfolk's going ahead with a much-needed extension of their treated water supply from Portage la Prairie. Mayor Neil Christoffersen outlines the source of the funding required for the project.

"Last month there was an announcement that the federal government was funding water lines in North Norfolk to the tune of $1.5 million, and there will also be a $750,000 contribution from water services board, with the rest of it put up by the potential customers and the municipality."

He notes their last agenda saw the council make a decision.

"What came onto our agenda at the last meeting was the actual paperwork and the cost-sharing agreement. So, we passed a resolution to make it official that we've signed up with this agreement and we're going to go ahead with it in 2017. So, what it means to the municipality is that there'll be quite a number of people who have asked for treated water, and it comes from Portage, to be supplied with this water."

Christoffersen notes they worked closely with the Water Services Board to get the agreements in place, and the borrowing by-laws. This cost sharing agreement is just one step closer toward the tendering process.

He says they'll extend the projects they've already been working on for the last six or seven years to supply more water to the residents. Christoffersen adds there's a crucial need for this steady supply of treated and potable water, seeing as several residents haven't had such a supply up to this point.
