The Portage la Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce is celebrating a major milestone on Wednesday. The Chamber was formed in 1886, and this year marks the 130th anniversary since it's formation. A celebration is planned at the Fort la Reine Museum to mark the occasion, and Chamber Vice-President Preston Meier hopes to see the community come out in full force to show their support. He notes the celebration will feature a barbecue in support of the museum and Portage Plains United Way, and even a bit of a look into the Chamber's first day.

"We're going to actually have Sir Archibald William Prest, who was the original secretary of the board of trade back in 1886. We've kind of resurrected him. He'll be there to greet everybody and introduce what the document is. We're going to kind of go through a ceremonial thing of resigning the formation of the board of trade. We're going to have the signatures of the past presidents, in addition to the signatures of our MP, MLA, mayor, and of course our reeve as well."

He notes it's always amazing to look back and see those who've been with the chamber in various capacities, noting Premier Brian Pallister had served as president in 1990. Meier says it's exciting to be a part of an organization that's been around for so long. He feels that longevity creates credibility, and today's Portage Chamber is just as relevant as the chambers of the past.

"I think it's --first of all-- phenomenal an organization has been around that long. Secondly, to be as vibrant as they've been and as involved as they've been for that length of time. We have a strong board right now that I feel strongly represents our business community. I think it's neat to be a part of it in that length of time, and to help carry that on. Hopefully we're around for another 130 years."

Meier notes they'll have several past presidents in attendance at the event, as well as dignitaries from all levels of government. However, he also wants to see Chamber members, non-members, and residents come out to celebrate the milestone. The event begins at 11:00 Wednesday morning, with the ceremonial signing taking place at 12:30.
