A recent study at the University of Regina has cast some doubts on the efficiency of the various programs aimed at helping first responders deal with PTSD. Portage Fire Chief Phil Carpenter says all emergency services such as fire and police departments and ambulance personnel are exposed to many different types of stressful incidents with which it can be difficult to cope. Carpenter notes, however, that he believes the right support mechanisms are in place and have been very helpful in most cases. He says some of the members of the Portage fire department have used those supports and as far as he knows it's worked fairly well.  Carpenter adds these kinds of programs help show the first responders that people do care about them and appreciate the services they provide.
