While it hasn't been that long since Portage la Prairie's City Council passed the 2016 budget, they're already taking a look at what's in store for next year. Finance Chair Brent Budz says they've been discussing some possible changes to the 2017 budget process but are currently in the midst of accepting applications from community groups looking for some support. Budz says each year they accept the applications, with this year's deadline set for September 2nd. Budz admits there's only so much they're able to provide through the grants, so they often aim to see where they'll make the largest splash with their funding.

"We see these types of applications on an annual basis, and we really look for what the investment is that we're making, and the impact in the community. We really want to make sure our dollars are leveraged in a manner that we're benefiting as many possible citizens or visitors to our community as possible."

He says it's always difficult to choose which organizations receive the funding, noting while the need is always there, there are limited funds. In their 2016 budget, the city had provided a total of $522,669 in grants to various organizations, with the largest contribution given to the Library with a grant of $264,219.

Earlier conversations surrounding the 2017 budget aimed to create more efficiencies in the budget. Historically city council had met with department managers, who outlined their work and funding requirements. Next year, Council will provide funding without an increase, and task the departments with making the best use of those dollars.
