You can get a good deal on a bike, while supporting a great cause tomorrow. The 36th annual Firefighters Burn Fund Bike Auction goes Saturday morning, hosted by the Portage la Prairie fire hall. Fire Chief Phil Carpenter says the public has once again shown great support for the auction, resulting in more than 100 bikes to be auctioned off.

"It's very comparable I would say to other years. Usually we're at about a hundred to 120 bikes. We're thanking the public very much on this, we've had a lot of donated bikes this year. A lot of our donated bikes are in really good shape and well looked after. We do appreciate that and we feel it goes to a good cause."

He says there are some bikes they won't be auctioning off, solely because they're not in good shape. However, Carpenter says those bikes are still available through a sale at the end of the auction.

Bikes in the scrap pile

"We'll call it the scrap pile, if you may. There's a about 20 bikes in that pile already. As the auction goes on, if people don't bid on these bikes that pile will get bigger. We'll sell that pile of bikes at the end of the auction. That's another opportunity if you're going to be fixing up bikes, there are parts there you can use for that application."

The formal auction begins at ten o'clock, but those interested can stop by at nine to see the bikes beforehand. Carpenter expects the auction to wrap up around noon.
