Child and Family Services of Central Manitoba held a barbecue today in their office parking lot in Portage la Prairie.

Foundation administrator Nancy funk explains why.

PCI Choir at barbecue"Today's barbecue is going to Chance 2 Camp, our camp program that provides an opportunity for kids from economically disadvantaged homes in the central region to attend summer camp. We've had a great crowd once again. The weather cooperated. Or tables have been full all day. So, we're fantastically over-the-moon excited about our crowd."

Funk notes many hands help make it a great success.

"Without the support of our community and our sponsors and everybody involved those kids don't get to go to camp. So, that's an opportunity that's taken away from them. And for a lot of those kids, sometimes their only activity that they get to participate in in a year, so it's a big deal. We're super fortunate to have Darren and Lori Miller from Portage Supermarket. They've been our food partner since the start of the barbecue."

Tables and customers enjoying barbecueFunk adds volunteers also included RBC staff, and donations came in from Richardson Milling, Portage Credit Union and Total Travel. She says the CFS staff were a huge part of the event, barbecuing and working the tables, making homemade desserts, removing trash, and everything else that's required. Funk says she also thanks those who attended, donated prizes and all who made it another successful day.
