This week, Portage la Prairie City Council unveiled some amendments to the Animal Control By-law, during their Committee meeting.

The amendments will receive first reading during the June 27th Council meeting. One amendment deals with re-homing animals, while another focuses on dangerous animals.

Community Services Committee Chair Ryan Espey says they're not related, and outlines both.

"The re-homing of the animal will be animals that are captured by Animal Control. If the owner isn't able to be found, or they're stray, we will make every effort to find a home for that animal before they're destroyed. And then on the other side, the amendment regarding the Dangerous Animal Hearing Board, if an animal comes before that board, whatever that board decides will be the final decision."

Espey acknowledges the controversy over the dangerous animal decision last February.

"There was some controversy that we all saw the last time there was a dangerous animal hearing, and the decision that was made over the dog. And I think there was maybe some communication breakdown in the initial hearing, and then possibly again when it came before Council for the appeal. So I'm hoping that everyone will be well informed before a dangerous animal appeal, and make sure all their evidence is presented, because that's going to be their one opportunity."

Here are the amendments, and here's the full Animal Control By-law.
