The President of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities calls amalgamation a work in progress.

Smaller municipalities forced to join up with their neighbours have now gone through two budget cycles.

“Certainly amalgamation has been a real challenge. Forget the process but the reality is municipalities have stepped up to the plate. They are working for their citizens” said Chris Goertzen.

Goertzen added AMM will continue to be there to support and guide municipalities. “We are really proud of the new leadership because those civic leaders have really stepped up to the plate.”

Amalgamated municipalities are dealing with challenges in areas like administrative duties and policing.

Goertzen wouldn't say the larger municipalities have created a lot more efficient government but he says local civic leaders are doing their best to work hard and do what is best for their residents.
