A nine-year-old girl from Southport took home a number of medals at the 2016 Scotdance Canada Championship in Winnipeg last week. Two of those medals were for first place in different categories, and Alexis Iles was also awarded a trophy as over-all winner for her age category. Alexis says the competition was very nervewracking, but she was ready because she practices her dancing several times each week.

She notes her father's side of the family is Scottish and he was the one who first suggested that she might enjoy doing some traditional Highland dancing. Alexis says she gave it a try, adding she really liked it so she decided to carry on. She notes she was very shocked when her number was called as the over-all winner in her category at last week's championship. Alexis adds she's definitely going to continue dancing, because her teacher always gives her new steps to practice and that makes it even more fun to do.
