Portage la Prairie's Age Friendly Committee has been working on several projects to help make the the community more welcoming, member Val Garlick says.

Portage Community Revitilization Corporation's representative on the Age Friendly Committee, Garlick updated city council on some of the work its completed over the past year at this week's meeting.

One of those projects was the revision and printing of a new Seniors Resource Guide, with 500 copies being distributed throughout Portage.

"That's a really great resource for both seniors and their family members, Garlick says. "It has in one spot, all of the different services and programming that's available for seniors in our community."

Garlick says they've also been working on a business certification program, working with local shops to learn how to become more age friendly as a community.

"We've had several businesses go through the certification process," Garlick explains. "And we're looking to hopefully do more promotion around that in the coming year."

Garlick adds the committee is trying to raise awareness of the importance of making the community more age friendly, as it helps make it a more welcoming place for all.
