The Portage Islanders opened their South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League Regular Season with a win yesterday.

They needed overtime to knock off Notre Dame 4-3 on the road. Islanders' Jeremy Brooks was thrilled to get their first win out of the way early, unlike last year. He says it wasn't their best start to the game.

"I think we were a little sluggish. We haven't skated together much, and haven't really had much chemistry with lines or anything like that. For a first period on the road, it was nice to flatten the score out on that, and get to it in the second and the third."

Islanders' import Jordan Boyd scored their first two goals of the year in the second period. Brooks says the 2 imports they added really bring an offensive edge.

"Both our imports were great. It's nice to be able to rely on those guys for a little bit of offensive touch. They're both 2 way forwards, so they came back and were back-checking hard. It was nice to see."

The Islanders next game is their home opener. It's Saturday at 8 p.m. against Altona. Get all the stats from the game here.
