The Portage Golf Club handed junior golfer Owen Gillespie with the Portage Junior Golf Club Award in Memory of Joyce Collier this week.

CPGA Pro Brad Young says Gillespie shined in the categories required to be eligible for the award.

"Any golfer who's looking to improve themselves as a golfer, as a person, and are looking to get out there and play in a lot of large events. Owen did terrific in that area this year."

Gillespie shares his reaction on winning the award, and outlines a few things he worked on over the year.

"It's really nice and it's a huge honour to get it. I played a lot of golf and got better as the year went along. I was lowering my scores mostly, better putting, and I probably hit more greens."

He spent a lot of his summer at the Portage Golf Club, and other courses across Manitoba. He lists a few of his favorite few events from the year.

"The Junior Open was a good day, I won that won. The Manitoba Summer Games were tons of fun, I shot pretty good there and we came 3rd with Central Team. Portage Club Championship is always fun, shooting here in Portage for two days, Manitoba Junior Open is always fun too."

Gillespie also placed 5th with the Portage Collegiate Golf team.
