Southern Health Santé-Sud's on track to end the year in the black. Chief Financial Officer Ryan Green says they ended February with a surplus of more than $1.2 million. He notes they still have to look at the numbers for another month, but anticipates ending the year ahead.

"There will be some one-time adjustments and accruals to do. It's hard to project that too closely to March, but it looks like we'll definitely have a surplus. Revenues have been fairly strong, funding's been good, and we've held the line on expenses as best we can, while still maintaining levels of care."

He notes the board's also approved a balanced budget for their 2016-2017 fiscal year. Green says that budget once again focuses on maintaining balance between their finances and health care, but notes they're also looking to invest in prevention.

"We're trying to invest upstream as best we can, in areas that will hopefully give us levels of prevention down that road. Those are always hard because it's hard to measure how you do that, because if you can invest and have more community programming, maybe your ERs or hospital beds may not be quite as busy."

Green notes this year will see the completion of two major capital projects; the Notre Dame Hospital and the Tabor Home in Morden. He notes no similar sized capital projects are on the horizon at this point in time.
