Last weekend, Oakville and Area held their Volunteer Appreciation Awards Banquet. They recognized a handful of individuals who put in their time to serve their communities.

Amongst the recipients was Carter Miller, who received the Youth Volunteer of the Year Award. He tells us some of what he's involved in.

"I help at fall suppers and senior citizen events," says Miller. "I am part of the Oakville School Leadership team, and I did some bake sales for Cancer Care in the summer."

Miller says he's proud to receive the award, as he carries on a Miller legacy, as both his dad and grandpa have received it as well, making it an event spanning three generations.

Other recipients of the evening include Sian Taris for her Lifetime Contribution, and Dana Grant as Citizen of the Year.

Barb Galbraith, who nominated Carter for this award noted that Carter has continued the legacy started by his parents, Darcy and Andrea Miller by fundraising for the charity, Growing Support for Cancer.

Other recipients of the evening include Sian Taris for her Lifetime Contribution, and Dana Grant as Citizen of the Year.

Taris is heavily involved in the community. She's involved with the Oakville Skating Club and Rink Board, as well as the Oakville School Parent Council. She's also helped out with Local 4H clubs, the Oakville Chamber of Commerce, Fowl Suppers and the Oakville Fair Booth. Dana also volunteers a lot for the Oakville Curling Club.

Grant is a member of the Oakville Engagement Committee that organizes events in the community to bring citizens together such as Easter Egg Hunts, Summer Rocks, Harvest Windfall, and Winter Lights Extravaganza.

The evening included greetings from Dennis Galbraith, President of the Oakville Community Club, Garth Asham of the R.M. of Portage la Prairie and Ian Wishart, MLA for Portage la Prairie. Murray McLenehan brought congratulations on behalf of the Portage la Prairie School division and acted as MC for the event.
