For many, spring break means going away from the area on trips, but for others, it means staying near Portage la Prairie to take advantage of what the area offers.

Zapphira Neuschwander, the PRRA's Recreation Manager, says this can be one of the busiest times of the year. This week, she says, they offer many services to parents looking for something to do with their kids.

"We have lots of public swim times this week. From 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, you can come down to the pool for a regular public swim. Then, throughout the week, we have lots of public skate options. We have the tiny tots, we have the family skates, we have sticks and pucks for all ages, we have a senior skate, and there's something for everyone there. So whatever age group or speed you seek, there's something for you."

She also notes that they try to offer something like this every year as they find it essential.

"Lots of people take spring break as the opportunity to get away. But we want to make spring break a bit exciting for people staying in Manitoba. The kids also want an exciting spring break, and parents usually need to get out of the house. So, this just gives them a bit of a break."

Just down the road is another Rec Plex that is helping the kiddos stay busy this week.

Madison Connolly is the manager of Southport's recreational facilities. She says that at this time of year, everyone is usually looking for something to do.

"Of course, everyone's looking for recreational opportunities in winter, but spring break is also quite busy. We live in Manitoba, so spring can be a little bit chilly outside, but we offer many indoor low-cost recreational opportunities for all ages."

She notes that they understand that having children can sometimes be expensive, so low-cost options are essential.

"Our goal here is to embrace recreational opportunities for all. And so it would be important to decrease rates and have promotions during spring break. We can bring in some new people who have never been here. But also just have a positive outlook for those who are looking for activities."
