We're all wondering what restrictions will be eased at what times the province deems necessary during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Portage City Councillor Melissa Draycott addresses garage sale season.

"We've seen some restrictions lifted in this last week due to the announcement from the province the week prior," says Draycott. "I would say that there are still some things in Portage that the city had put in place that are not available to the public, and some things that the City of Portage is requesting that the public not proceed with. And unfortunately, garages sales are on that list."

She says the city understands it's a popular item in the city and they realize Portagers might be gearing up for some garage sales of their own. However, she notes, gathering sizes are still restricted to no more than ten people, whether or not it's indoors or outdoors.

"But in addition to that, garage sales are at high risk because it's nearly impossible to put in any of the preventative measures that many of the businesses have put in place for COVID-19," adds Draycott. "So, that would include distancing from other people around you of that six feet, or two metres, at a garage sale --  that's just not conducive."

Draycott notes appropriate cleaning efforts with cashless and no-contact payments are difficult at a garage sale as well. She says we just need to hold off for the time being.
