The Central Plains Capitals are 2-0 to start their 2016-17 Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League season.

The Caps won 5-3 Friday night in Brandon to open the season, the dominated Norman 9-3 at the PCU Centre yesterday.

Central Plains has racked up 34 points in their first two games with forward Reilly Funk leading the way with 2 goals and 3 assists, and 14 other players registering at least a point. Caps' rookie forward Logan Calder has 4 points in two games, all of which have come on the powerplay or penalty kill. Calder gives his thought's on his early success.

"I feel like I pass the puck real well, and just work well with my teammates on my line, whoever it is that's out there with us at the time."

Caps' Head Coach Brad Gnidziejko knows it's early, but can see good a good future for his club this year.

"Teams are putting things in place, and the kids are making more mistakes than they would be otherwise. I went to a few games on the weekend and I think that we match up pretty good with most. Some of the bigger teams in town that you'd expect to have trouble with, I think we're going to give them a run."

The Caps alternated between goalies for each game, Miles Minor played in Brandon, and Portage la Prairie native Riley Sveistrup won yesterday. Sveistrup's excited about his team's speed and offensive strength.

"The first two games we've been playing really well. I don't really know what to say, we're playing good defense and from that, we're getting the puck deep every time. We're scoring a lot of goals, we've got 14 goals in 2 games, and if we continue to play like this we're going to have a real good season."

The Caps are back at it Wednesday when they host the Wild at the PCU Centre.
